'Gender Matters' is an exhibition created by the International Museum Studies masters students across 3 museums in Gothenburg.

 

We have applied gendered labels to objects and to ourselves for centuries. Should we blindly accept these labels? This exhibition, across three museums in Gothenburg, examines how and where gender matters in society. Through the exhibition at the City Museum we explore 19th century gender roles in relation to those of today. At the Maritime Museum we look at how gender roles on land are contested at sea. In the Natural History Museum we discuss how the animal world challenges human ideas of gender roles.

 

Vi har satt genusetiketter på objekt och på oss själva i århundraden. Bör vi blint acceptera dessa etiketter? Denna utställning, som äger rum i tre av Göteborgs museer, undersöker hur och var konstruktioner av genus har betydelse i samhället. I utställningen på Stadsmuseet utforskar vi 1800-talets könsroller i förhållande till dagens. På Sjöfartsmuseet ser vi på hur könsroller på land blir ifrågasatta till havs. På Naturhistoriska Museet diskuterar vi hur djurriket utmanar mänskliga idéer om genus.

   

CITY MUSEUM/STADSMUSEUM

To balance the male focus in the existing exhibition, we expose another side of Gothenburg's history. We share untold stories to encourage visitors to discover the links between past and present. Thus, we hope to raise questions and inspire visitors to think about gender roles, both then and now.

 

För att balansera fokus på det manliga i den befintliga utställningen, avslöjar vi en annan sida av Göteborgs historia. Vi berättar nya historier för att uppmuntra besökarna att hitta sambanden mellan dåtid och nutid. Därigenom hoppas vi kunna väcka frågor och inspirera besökarna att tänka på könsroller, både nu och då.

  

MARITIME MUSEUM/SJÖFARTSMUSEET

A ship is not just a ship; it is a space in which gender roles can be altered, identities challenged and new possibilities explored. The exhibition seeks to examine some of the complexities of this space in relation to gender. Exploring stereotypes, superstitions and relationships, we illuminate various stories of the multifaceted history of the sailor at sea.

 

Ett skepp är inte bara ett skepp; det är en plats där könsroller kan ändras, där identiteter utmanas och där nya möjligheter utforskas. Utställningen syftar till att utforska platsens komplexitet med tanke på genusfrågor. Genom att granska stereotyper, fördomar och relationer, belyser vi olika berättelser om sjöfararens mångfacetterade historia.

  

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM/NATURHISTORISKA MUSEET

The exhibition explores the differences between biological sex and culturally constructed notions of gender. We offer an alternative to assigning existing ideas of heteronormative gendered roles to the animal world. In doing so we reflect on the constraints we place on our species and others.

 

Utställningen utforskar skillnaderna mellan biologiskt kön och kulturella föreställningar om genus. Vi erbjuder ett alternativ till att överföra heteronormativa könsroller till djurriket. Därmed reflekterar vi över de begränsningar vi sätter på oss själva och andra varelser. (read less)

General Information

Gender Matters is an exhbition being put on by the students of The University of Gothenburg's International Museum Studies (IMS) Master's programme.

 

The exhibition will be on display from May 31-June 7, 2011.

 

Ticket price: 40 SEK provides entrance to all three museums
