"Valdrada's inhabitants know that each of their actions is, at once, that action and its mirror image, which possesses the special dignity of images, and this awareness prevents them from succumbing for a single moment to chance and forgetfulness".

from Invisibles Cities- Valdrada- by I. Calvino

I take my pictures using a 5x4 inch. view camera, and the process is of course quite slow, and maybe a bit wearing: the sitter must remain standing - almost entirely motionless- while I'm setting the camera and later during the shooting, because once I have loaded the film I can't modify the framing anymore.

The white background I always use in my portraits - like Avedon already did - make them not tied to particular spaces or time. The sitters are only identified by their first name - sometimes by their age - and more often with the month and year in which I took the pictures. The name is anyway the very essential element that introduces the portrait, so as to be the only and genuine information for the viewer, the only thing they know for sure.
