Garden of Reason is an exciting programme of contemporary art in a unique historic setting, from the National Trust at Ham House and Garden in Richmond, 28 April - 23 September 2012.

Eight artists have been selected to create new work inspired by the 17th century formal gardens and their owner, Elizabeth Dysart, Duchess of Lauderdale.

Elizabeth Dysart inherited Ham House and Garden from her Father in 1649. She was a resourceful woman, politically active, fascinated by new ideas and a great collector. Garden of Reason will create the opportunity to keep Elizabeth’s intentions for Ham House alive: to be a forerunner in taste, fashion and opulence, showcasing contemporary art works created during radically changing times.

The Garden was established in 1670, which was a time of great change and innovation in science and the arts, and we have been inspired by what is often known as the ‘Age of Reason’ in the title of the exhibition. Taking, as a starting point, that the gardens are often misunderstood by visitors, and that there are elements missing from the original designs, we have asked the artists to consider the original gardens and how they might look in 2012.

Using the archives to carry out meticulous research, and directly responding to the unique surroundings of Elizabeth’s garden, the artists will install works that interpret the site, increase our knowledge and curiosity of that period and challenge audiences, giving them a fresh perspective. Our visitors will be encouraged to engage with the space in new ways, through sound, film, sculpture and performance.

There is also a Garden of Reason Interaction Programme, working with community groups on four projects to develop new visitor materials, including a new book about the plants in the garden and an animated film about Elizabeth Dysart. This project started with a series of workshops over the autumn half term, and will continue over 2012 with a series of late night events, showcasing the work produced during the winter.

We look forward to welcoming you to Garden of Reason in 2012. Join us for a curatorial tour and take a new look at Ham House and Garden as interpreted by contemporary artists.
