Founded in 1974, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture (formerly the Afro-American Cultural Center) exists to present, preserve and promote African-American art, culture and history for the education and enjoyment of all.
The Gantt Center features three galleries with rotating exhibitions and is the permanent home for the John and Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art. Acquired by Bank of America and pledged to the Center in 1998, the Hewitt is one cornerstone of the Gantt Center’s permanent collection and contains works by master artists including Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jonathan Green, Jacob Lawrence and Henry O. Tanner.
The Center offers a broad spectrum of programs and events including lectures, multi-generational workshops, film screenings and dance, musical & theatrical performances.
