This testimonial for my friend, Gagah, is well overdue. I first became familiar with him because of the surreal, stream-of-consciousness poetry of his comments. He has an unbelievable knowledge of art history and always seemed to find the appropriate reference when commenting on my work. And, as mentioned in other testimonials here, his command of English puts us native speakers to shame. His photography is as graceful, surprising, playful, and poignant as his language. The continuing essay he has made of his young nieces and nephews is one of the great achievements on flickr and fotolog. I hope to meet Gagah in person someday. Please come to NY, you will always have a place to stay.

I met gagah in the late 90s in Brazil. He was then the 'soul' of any place he was in. Guess he still is. And such a walking encyclopedia! He could chat about anything, and drink a lot of beer, and laugh. Picture a 30sth, thin, long-haired wild guy who looked 13...that was him. Taking pictures? All the time. No digicam… Read more

He could chat about anything, and drink a lot of beer, and laugh. Picture a 30sth, thin, long-haired wild guy who looked 13...that was him. Taking pictures? All the time. No digicams then, but great pics of course. Now I look at his pics and go wow. He's got style! And every new pic is a surprise, a beautiful surprise. But above all things gagah is a great dude, a friend you can't forget...love you, man.

There are so many fine photographers out there, but Gagah is nearest and dearest to my own heart. There are so many fine photographers out there, but Gagah is nearest and dearest to my own heart. I see him pursuing something so tender, so fragile - rooted in the darkness of this world and the brevity of our moments, and yet - and yet - full of life and light. I come back to page through his photos again and again - he doesn't know. Gagah awakens all that is noblest and most pure in me, fills me with longing to see everyone happy and alive and untouched by the heaviness of the world... I've always wanted to write a testimonial for Gagah - and only Gagah - but it is so daunting to try to speak about things that are so personally and profoundly moving. I don't want to drag them down with my flimsy and inadequate words, and yet I want the world to know that I love Garibaldi Dantas and am overflowing with gratitude for what he does to me...
