Artist Statement

Nature, structures, and human thought all involve some variant of pattern. Pattern, structure and materials are the substance of my work. I use common aesthetics such as light, color, and texture to create an order. Squares and rectangles are the shapes I mainly use. My work is united by an array of identical or similar parts in a pattern, commonly the grid. This pattern varies from random to mathematical.

However, randomness doesn’t actually exist in the world. I might choose to change a single detail among many details in a certain piece, but I didn’t pick that particular detail randomly. I try to do it with no particular order, but unconsciously my brain might be picking details purposively.

My work is delicate and calm. Color is important in my work because it adds to uniformity and emotion. The bright and feminine colors are satisfying, attractive, and comforting. I use collected and found materials, fabric and paper, watercolors and ink. My work uses elements of Formalism and Serial Art: art about form, not context and art made of uniform parts assembled in modular ways.

When creating sculptures and installations, I strive to have my piece stand in the space, not on top of it. I might create a literal layer of material over the wall, but it is still the original wall, only slightly modified.
