I am an 18 year old photographer living in the heart of the harbor; Wilmington, California. I was born with a medical condition known as Muscular Dystrophy, which weakens the bodies muscles (mainly my legs), forcing me to be in a wheelchair my whole life. Fortunately, I was blessed with a creative mind, a passionate heart, and a never give up attitude towards life. Last year I chose to take Photography as my elective. I had no experience whatsoever with a camera, but I thought it would be a fun class to take. I would have never guessed that it would be such a life changing experience. Photography has grasped my heart and taken it to places I never knew existed. When I am out shooting new photos, I feel that even though I am in a wheelchair, all things are possible. It is an emotional high I have never felt before, and now I can not be without my camera. My former photography teacher once told me that I should use my disability as an advantage in photography. He explained to me that my perspective is much different from everyone else's, because for all my life, I have seen the world sitting down, where as everyone else is five or six feet tall. He further explained that I get to see many things that an able bodied person would miss. So from that point on, I no longer see myself as a handicapped photographer, but a photographer with an advantage.
