my name is lisa, i am a photo-based artist from a small town in northern bc, canada, called kitimat. i currently live in vancouver, where I completed a bfa with a major in photography from emily carr university in 2008.
my art tends to revolve out of the need to journal, or collect things. i use photography as a way to work through thoughts and reflect on situations, which are sometimes intense, sad, sometimes funny.
i am half Haisla first nations and half british. much of my work comes out of exploring this aspect of myself; duality in identity and feelings of being an outsider, never really belonging to one "side". in my photography, i tend to try to find other things that feel or seem out of place.
my work usually involves images of the world around me, scenes often without people, things i find funny, images of my loved ones, or myself. my recent photos have been trying to explore my relationship with photography, how once you take a photo the moment you are trying to capture has changed. after many years of focusing on self portraiture, i feel my direction shifting from inwards to outwards.. seeing myself as i belong in the world around me.
