The Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery encourage enjoyment and understanding of the arts of Asia and the cultures that produced them. Known as the national museums of Asian art, the Galleries inspire study and provoke thought through collections of ancient and contemporary masterpieces from Japan, China, Korea, Southeast Asia, India, and the Near East. The Freer also holds an important collection of American art, including many works by James McNeill Whistler.
