Fred Croydon, the artist, was born and raised in Hawaii. His adult years have been spent in the Pacific NW, where he became seriously interested in the NW Coastal Native Art in it's many forms. He was intrigued by the bold, and sometimes colorful, graphics of the many clans.
He traveled through the coastal regions of Washington State, Vancouver Island, British Columbia Mainland, and Alaska, observing and learning about the art and the cultures of the first people, at their culture centers, and at over 250 totem poles in various locations. He also studied the differences in the culture and the art of the many clans.
During the early years his art followed closely the art styles of the original clans. In recent years his inspiration comes from observing and studying the wildlife, and designing around the natural lines of the creatures, while following the rules of the Pacific NW Coastal Art that has been defined over the years. The use of Primary form-lines of varying width to the define the outline of a creature continues to be his primary focus.
