Fraser Whitbread
Drag to set position!
Hi, my name is Fraser Whitbread and I reside in New Hampshire with his wife Susan, our dog Sarah, and nine well loved (but never spoiled!) cats. I'm originally from Canada and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. I created my first photograph (which I still have and which can be seen on my site under the title In the Beginning) in 1964. Taken in Banff National Park with a Brownie camera, the photo is of our dog ‘Kim’ with Mount Edith Carvel in the background. As my portfolio will attest, animals and pets (especially my beloved cats) are still a favorite subject of mine.
I am a graduate of the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, with a B.Sc. in Biology and an M.Sc. in Botany. My specialization is in the mycorrihzal associations of American Ginseng and I authored the pioneer study on these associations. A professionally trained wedding and portraiture photographer (a field I disliked greatly) my photographic experience now spans over forty years and has included many other fields from nature studies (especially flowers and insects) and architecture to scanning electron microscopy. I have traveled, and photographed, throughout Canada and much of the Eastern seaboard of the USA. I have also traveled to Isreal, Italy, Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago (birding in the rain forest) and Jamaica (on an agriculture student exchange through the University of Guelph). Although worlds apart, I love (photographic and otherwise) the islands; Trinidad, Jamaica and Newfoundland. I still consider Newfoundland to be the most photogenic spot I have ever traveled to with, by far, the most friendly and likeable residents.
A traditionalist who still clings to his twin lens relex 2 1/4” cameras, I have only recently moved into the realm of digital photography...a move I now admit I should have made sooner and which has opened up whole new vistas of photographic opportunities to me. Coming from a film background, I still tend to compose in the camera and increasingly I have moved away from artificial light sources. You will note that almost all my images (with some rare exceptions found in the Archival section) are shot in available light. I see in available light. I shoot in available light.
Hope you enjoy my ever evolving work. Fraser
