artist statement

"i am an artist who has embraced digital photography for all the freedom of experimentation and expression it allows. my images reveal the beauty i see all around us, filtered through my camera lens, and composed with a careful balance of spontanaeity and deliberateness. light and especially colour play an important role in much of my work.

"immersion in nature can calm, rejuvenate, and inspire us all. the idea of expressing my passion for nature through my art motivates me. i also enjoy encouraging others to notice things they wouldn't normally seek. ethereal moments, abstract forms, and pretty little things all draw me in with equal fascination, and i love being able to share these small pleasures with others. the common and mundane reveal a hidden charm when explored from unusual angles, so i can often be found wielding my camera and getting my knees dirty in local wild spaces and gardens."

blocked artist found instant gratification with digital camera!

always enjoyed photography, some b&w darkroom experience (briefly with thaddeus holownia @ mt. allison u... fascinating!), but since dad brought home a canon powershot a20 (2001?), i've discovered the joy and convenience of digital.

i bought my first DSLR in 2007, the sony a100, simply because i had 2 fabulous minolta lenses handed down to me from my parents. july 2009 i upgraded again to the sony a700, and i'm in love!

my kit currently consists of:

* sony alpha dslr a100 (currently has issues)

* sony alpha dslr a700

* sony 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 (a100 kit lens)

* minolta af 50mm f1.7

* minolta af 70-210mm f4 "beercan"

* sony 100mm f2.8 macro (the new kid... very excited to try it out!)

* hoya cir-pol filter

* giotto vt 809 tripod (bulky, ungainly, but works in a pinch)

plus my various bits of "poor-man's macro" paraphernalia:

* reverse mount and aperture control ring (to reverse mount the 50mm directly to camera body)

* hoya close-up filters set (+1, +2, +4)

contemplating buying extension tubes for more macro options. or a tele-converter. and some reversing rings, step-up and step-down rings. oh, the list goes on!

nature is my muse, love to be lost in that moment... often getting up close and personal (mmmm-macro) with whatever strikes my fancy (all amazing creations) and hoping to express the beauty i find to the viewer... hoping to be original.

absolutely in love with colour... tom thomson, my idol. photographic expressionism. obsessive colourist. (wish every monitor could be perfectly calibrated, to match my ideal.) fascinated by changing light, passage of time.

love to know what these images invoke for others, i appreciate all your comments! i might reciprocate more if i could stick to one short comment, but i always feel compelled to give a sort of mini critique, trying not to repeat myself over and over. don't worry... i don't believe everyone should do this, or comments would be sparse, and this community would not survive without wows, beautifuls and amazings!

please check out the groups i have started!
