Interview for an Italian magazine.

 

When and how did you get in the photography and advertising world?

 

Since the beginning! My grandpa used to bring me along in the dark room at the age of 4 but I gotta tell you everything has got concrete after my academic experience. I was studying architecture when I attended my first photography course at the Sinar Academy.

 

Your first camera?

 

A present of my father, an Agfa made in orange and black plastic with an incredible design.

 

And the last one?

 

A Rolley 35mm portable of the ’59, with retractile optics and roller controls head-on, an ultra-compact camera for those years!

 

Your favorite?

 

The Nikkormat of the 70s likely, which I often borrowed from my dad’s collection, but generically a Reflex with an 18mm luminous for me is more than enough.

 

Technical question, digital or film?

 

Of course both, but better don’t get confused from the disarming convenience of the digital! ‘Cause now even the suitable films have got hard to find and the big format 13x18 – I’m talking of centimeters!!! – is gonna be missing. Fortunately film projects are not banned yet still the future, if we look at the equipment facet, is dark.

 

What do you think of the digital revolution?

 

Benefits are indisputable, if you have a cool idea you can get it real faster. That’s worth as well for an awful idea, worse luck, therefore it’s just a matter of time in which you see your work and project value.

 

Your first service? The one you’ll never forget…

 

It was the ’96. It has been commissioned by an important jet plane constructor. I had to fly in Oregon with a fellow, I had not a lot of experience anyway it was a cool adventure, my first transfer across the ocean. And the service we brought home was highly regarded.

 

What do you have in common you and the brand you work for, as for instance Nespresso and Ferrari?

 

The passion for coffee, and the cars I saw racing in Fiorano since my childhood. Seriously though… I’d say first of all the excellent relationships between people. Within the mentioned realities I get in touch with well-trained people pregnant of meaningful experience, they pretend a lot, they don’t forgive an imperfection then you may learn much at each service.

 

Your favorite picture?

 

Now, I guess, a portrait of a young Buddhist monk ten years old, you can find it on the home page of my photo diary! But I’m likely gonna change my mind quickly, possibly after my next trip!

 

Job and interest, joined or shared?

 

In my situation sounds impossible to share them. Each photographic message, either outgoing or ingoing, come what may is decoded at first by the optical nerve and that inscrutable machine our mind is, emotions, memories, impulse and passions, how can the two face of the medal be released?

 

When you think a new picture your inspiration gets from something or someone?

 

It gets from everything in that precise moment might result functional for the shot, as I expect it, and from everyone in my opinion best embody that image. Could be a novel by Edgar Alan Poe, a movie I saw the past year, a music on the radio…

 

So carrying on the same way: in the same wilderness island, and 5 tracks on the stereo… which band or musician??

 

Being son of the 80s I cannot forget, BeastieBoys, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine.

 

And 5 movies??

 

Then on the island there’s even a cinema! Cinema is my passion and I refuse the hypothesis to force me in the choice among only 5. Rather… let me choose my 5 untouchable directors of ever, all inclusive

Let it be…

Kubrick, Argento, Spielberg, Burton, Leone, though are always few, very few.

 

But would you get, when you tot things up, on this island?

 

Sure! After all this blessed island has not to be so empty anymore, if they make on with the same question to eachone… someone has inevitably left, carrying their choices so! If there’s a cinema they must need a photographer.

Intervista

 

Quando e come sei entrato nel mondo della fotografia e della pubblicità?

 

Da sempre! Mio nonno mi portava in camera oscura a 4-5 anni ma direi che tutto ha assunto forma “più concreta” dopo la mia esperienza universitaria. Studiavo architettura quando frequentai il mio primo corso di fotografia alla Sinar Accademy.

 

La tua prima macchina fotografica?

 

Un regalo di mio padre, una Agfa a telemetro in plastica arancione e nera con un design incredibile, personalmente penso abbia ispirato tutti i nuovi telefonini a conchiglia….

 

E l’ultima?

 

L’ultima è una Rollei 35mm tascabile del ‘59, con ottica retrattile e comandi a rotella sul fronte.

 

La tua preferita?

 

La Nikkormat degli anni 70 forse, che spesso prendevo in prestito dalla collezione di mio Padre, ma più genericamente basta una reflex con un 18mm luminoso e sono felice.

 

Domanda tecnica, digitale o pellicola?

 

E che ne so? Chiaramente tutti e due, meglio però non farsi confondere dalla comodità disarmante del digitale! Perché ora diventa difficile anche trovare le pellicole giuste e a me il grande formato 13x18, e sto parlando di centimetri!!!

comincia a mancare. Per fortuna ancora qualche progetto lo si porta in pellicola ma il futuro sul fronte materiale è parecchio grigio.

 

Cosa ne pensi di tutta la grande rivoluzione digitale?

 

I vantaggi sono innegabili, se hai una buona idea puoi renderla reale in tempi più veloci. Lo stesso vale anche per le idee mediocri, è solo una questione di tempi in cui vedi il valore del tuo lavoro e del tuo progetto.

 

Il tuo primo servizio? quello che non si scorda mai insomma…

 

Nel ’96. A commissionarlo era un importante costruttore di aviogetti ad uso privato. Dovetti volare in Oregon con un collega , avevo pochissima esperienza ma fu una bella avventura la mia prima trasferta oltre oceano. E fummo anche in grado di portare a casa un servizio molto apprezzato.

 

Cosa avete in comune tu e i brand con cui lavori, come Nespresso e Ferrari?

 

La passione per il caffè, e le auto che vedevo girare a Fiorano fin da piccolo. Scherzi a parte… direi che in primo luogo c’è un ottimo rapporto con le persone. Entro realtà come le sopracitate trovi persone molto preparate e con esperienze importanti, che pretendono parecchio e che non perdonano imperfezioni ma da cui puoi imparare moltissimo ad ogni incontro.

 

La tua foto preferita?

 

Al momento direi un ritratto fatto ad un piccolo monaco buddista di 10 anni, la trovi in home page nel mio fotodiario! Ma è probabile che a breve cambi idea, magari al rientro del prossimo viaggio!

 

Lavoro e passione, unirli o separarli?

 

Nel mio caso è impossibile scinderli. Ogni messaggio fotografico, sia in “uscita” che in “entrata”, sempre e comunque viene decodificato dapprincipio dal nervo ottico e da quella macchina impenetrabile che è la nostra mente tutta piena di emozioni, ricordi, impulsi e passioni, come si può districare questo intreccio che vincola le due facce della medaglia?

 

Quando pensi ad una nuova foto ti ispiri a qualcosa o qualcuno?

 

A tutto ciò che nel momento dello scatto risulta funzionale all’immagine così come io me l’aspetto, e a tutti coloro che l’immagine a mio avviso, meglio incarna.

 

A tutto e a tutti?

 

Si, può essere un racconto di Poe, un film che ho visto l’anno prima, un brano che ascolto alla radio…

 

Quindi continuando sulla stessa linea: nella solita isola deserta, e 5 brani nello stereo… di quali autori??

 

Come degno figlio degli anni 80 non posso dimenticare, BeastieBoys, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine.

 

I 5 film??

 

Allora sull’isola c’è pure il cinema! Il cinema è la mia passione e rifiuto l’ipotesi di esser costretto a scegliere fra soli 5. Facciamo piuttosto … che io debba scegliere i 5 intoccabili registi di tutti i tempi, all inclusive del loro carnè di film

 

Essia….

 

Kubrick, Argento,Spielberg, Burton, Leone, e comunque son sempre pochi, pochissimi.

 

Ma su quest’isola, a conti fatti, ci andresti?

 

Certo che si!

Dopotutto questa benedetta isola non deve essere più tanto deserta, se a tutti continuano a fare la stessa domanda… qualcuno ci sarà pure andato, portandosi con sé le proprie scelte e allora! Anche lì ci sarà di che vivere.

E se c’è un cinema c’è di che fotografare.
