EVERYTHING IS BEASTMODE

At a time when Micheal Jordan was on the minds of anyone with a dream of becoming a basketball player, he was on the bar. Now let me introduce you to Jamar Brown aka Lord Vital (the BEAST). In the mid 90's I was taught basic calisthenics by two individuals Kev Web and Triple L, whom I met in my elementary school playground P.S. 305 in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn where they were working out. I was with a gang so this was as an alternative way to keep myself occupied without looking towards prison as an option in an economy where gangs and drugs plague the streets of Brooklyn.

"You're only as strong as the ones you teach."

This was the greatest lesson that I was taught. This statement is what made me become a household name as I traveled from park to park teaching and training anyone who has the will to learn about calisthenics. This is also how I built my legacy.

“The only one close to beating me is me, and even he don’t stand a chance.”

This is the phrase I’ve created to keep pushing myself and others past their expectations and give them the confidence needed to attempt my workout routines that the average person would give up on. A person has to know and understand that their greatest challenge is within themselves.

In 1998 I adapted the name BEAST from a close friend named Shadow who would call me a beast because of my style of training. This type of training today is known as EXTREME CALISTHENICS. In 2001 Team Beastmode was created. With only 2 members at this time, the main objective was to just showcase our talent while showing others that what they thought was impossible is now possible if you challenge yourself. In 2003 a video was recorded by BlackIceProductions called “Pro Celebrity Training Vol.1” featuring me. This was my first video, we didn’t even know what to do with the footage...we just wanted the world to witness the power of the one we call BEAST. This video was posted on October 1,2007 and has accumulated over 120,000 views over the internet. Since I started this movement my team and I have been gaining notoriety everywhere there is a park or gym.

Now in 2011, you can't say the word calisthenics without the word BEASTMODE being mentioned. I have definitely made my own lane in this world of fitness using youtube as a channel to get my message across.

I can remember when it felt like I was the only one pushing the envelope with this calisthenic game. In 2002 I came across the first calisthenic competition I ever seen in P.S.21 park hosted by 5B’s Ray Funn. There was a lot of competitors but the competition was basic. The workout was basic. I never entered the tournament because I felt that it wasn’t challenging enough for me. And when I displayed my skills I was told that I was crazy... I took that as a complement. This actually fueled me to become more daring, more explosive and crazier. The workouts became more intense, harder..to the point where only the strongest survived.

“Anyone can workout, but not everyone can teach”.

I was training everyone around me, from young to old. Even if you didn’t want to learn you were sucked into it if you were in my presence. And I didn’t discriminate or hold back. I showed my students everything. Shared all my knowledge because I wanted them to be better than me. But then I couldn’t have them being better than me. This is how I stayed on top of my game because I knew that the stronger my students got, the more I had to train to stay ahead of them.
