Whois Steev Selby?

G'day ... I've been with flickr since, well it wasn't flickr .. back in the halcyon days of Yahoo Groups.

It's pretty easy to say that photography for me is the answer to that question we are all asked when we're kids "What do you want to do when you grow up?" - Took me a 'few' years to grow up and life's sent me a fare share of challenges in the "inbetween" time - and still .. here I am.

I've been working in R&D for 35 years now - everything from developing designs in 3d from loose sketches form students to full manufacture, testing and implementation of designs.

In 2003 as a team member with our Formula SAE project I was there for our World Championship win of the FSAE cup in Detroit and have been associated with the team for 22 years - these days mostly advisory and a bit of camera work.

An avid reader but terrible writer .. verbally frustrated - photography gives me an outlet to share a sense of moment or convey a feeling that I'd waste a few thousand words doing a terrible job trying to describe.

As a lot of us do I've collected the odd camera over the years, ensuring that I've usually got a chance of catching that moment if it comes along - and shoot almost daily.

Graphic design and vector art is something I quite enjoy - and this year (2023) I've started doing the odd bit of sketching - it's a process that I find quite relaxing - thou don't expect to see any sketches one day soon.

As I've grown and the equipment has advanced so has my editing style, I, as we all may do look back at earlier efforts and cry "What on earth was I thinking posting this *#@*($&!!" - and often will revisit that image (assuming I have it as a raw file) and try it on for size with the current workflow often with quite surprising results.

A bit of an introvert when the camera comes out ... if I'm with a group I usually find myself wandering the opposite direction to the crowd.

I shoot Pentax (K1, K3, KP and K200D) and as of a November '23 I'm shooting Micro Four Thirds as well - specifically Olumpus (OM System) OM-1 - all wonderful tools to explore light with.

Steev is one of the best wide angle shooters you will come across...and a real master of long exposure . He is ultra resourceful and always thinking of ways to overcome limitations that stop the rest of us in our tracks. I raise my eyebrows every time he reaches into his camera bag to see what comes out, and how … Read more
