The photo essays contained within this stream offer atmospheric and textural insights into the relationships between the people and the places they inhabit. An important element of any great art is found within the conduit between the creator’s personal truth and it’s distillation to meaningful image. Enilffo Raeppa’s pictures provide a seamless and tangible interweaving of social documentary photography and art. Meaning is both literal and inferred and complex formal considerations combine subtly. In a very brief moment I have been inspired to ask more about these pictures than should or could be answered literally. I feel that my first impressions were founded as the mystery behind the motivations of these works was as much an invitation to inquire, as it was a challenge to one’s own commitment to discovery and personal truth. The thoughts and words which evolve from the ether of inference, skirt the boundaries of intent and narrative. Resolved images expose unfolding, stark and marginal worlds which are tempered by the often transient movement of peoples and their daily rituals. Within the layers and folds of dirty impermanence, transcendent textures are the vehicles for harmony and imbue scenes of human hardship with a deserving dignity and hope.
