James Mackay is a documentary photographer based in Burma and the UK.
He graduated from Central St Martins College of Art & Design in London and has worked extensively in Burma, mostly undercover, documenting humanitarian and political issues in the military controlled country. Working in close collaboration with underground networks both inside and outside Burma, he has undertaken a number of long-term projects documenting the democracy movement, political dissidents, human rights defenders and in particular the issue of Burma's political prisoners.
His work has been featured in film, books and by a number of leading publications and human rights organisations including TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Independent, Le Monde, The Guardian, VOGUE Japan, VOGUE UK, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, The Bangkok Post, The Irrawaddy, and Dazed & Confused.
It has been exhibited in New York, London, Bangkok and Washington DC and recognised with numerous awards including 4 Golds at the Prix de la Photographie Paris and as an Open Society Foundations grantee in 'Moving Walls 19'.
In November 2011 his long term project documenting Burma's political prisoners was published as the limited edition book "Abhaya: Burma's Fearlessness" featuring a foreword by Aung San Suu Kyi.
