I chose to include my A Level paintings in my portfolio because I wanted to show the type of style I began working with before I started the foundation course. I specifically chose these 3 paintings mainly because they represent my style and also my technique with the paint. My A Level work is completely different to my work at the Foundation College because during A Level, I was given specific projects that I had to work with and stick to the project title. But within the Foundation College its easier going meaning I can take the idea of the project and turn it into how I want to control it, this shows my independence for the work.
The artists Canaletto and Francisque Millet influenced these 3 landscapes paintings, which I have developed at my Foundation Course. I saw these artists work at the National Gallery and I was really interested by how interesting the sky was with the intriguing colours and the use of the brush stroke. I created these developments with the ideas of these artists. I particularly found the colours really moving in the painting Canaletto’s landscape as you can see numerous colours, which are used to create the scenery. The scenery in ‘Francisque Millet of the mountain landscape with lightning’ is also fascinating because the colours that were used to create such a great picture of the striking yellow lightning makes you think more of the story behind the painting.
My idea of these paintings that I wanted to show was to use the inspiration of the artists’ specific paintings and then to create my own choice of mountains and fields that I have created in these developments.
The collage, which I have included in my portfolio, also represents the same ideas of the landscape theme. The first piece shows a sunset, which I have created the sky with a collage of different magazines stuck together whilst the mountain was used with watercolors’.
The other piece was a landscape, which was created with acrylic paints divided into 4 sections. This looks mysterious, as they all seem to look like 4 separate paintings which makes you use you’re imagination to think behind the painting.
The next 4 pieces of work are mainly around the project idea of ‘Figures’. I started looking at 2 particular artists to help me with the idea of the movement of figure. The artists Chantal Joffe and Anna Bjerger have influenced me a lot with my work on my Foundation College, as I feel that her style in painting is similar to how I paint. I find their work inspiring mainly Chantal Joffe, which has helped me to create the figures in a way, which is new to me and has helped me improve my work. I used the idea of figures walking a dog in different environments, which was very interesting and I found enjoyable creating exciting developments.
Hopefully for the future I will see my work becoming more developed and will have more knowledge about the way I develop my pieces and what I want to create. Being on an art course at this university will help me in the future by working in my own studio space which could lead me to show my work in exhibitions.
