A True Story...
by Lisa Smith
One day, when little miss Lisa was very small...
Her first grade teacher, Mrs. Know-It-All,
Gave the class crayons and paper
On the page were 2 circles and 2 squares
Lisa loved to draw.. she started at age 3
Lisa drew a big sheep with lots and lots of curly hair!
.... then she drew a little tiny bumble bee
She was so excited she wiggled with glee!
Mrs. Know-It-All saw Lisa's drawing and let out a shriek!
Look at this sheep!
This is not neat!
The lines are here...
But you drew there!
"Little miss Lisa, for you, I give a C!"
Lisa slowly looked up...
Pouting a curious and puzzled pout
and she thought...
What IS all this fuss about?
No no no- this cannot be..
Those lines..
This box..
Surely..
They were not meant for me!
well... this is the beginning of Lisa's creative defiance.. I'm sure there's more... tune in next time..

San Diego artist, Lisa Smith has a strong sense for the conceptual. In inanimate objects she sees life and story -- symbolism, mystery and metaphor. She attempts to capture a quality of instant impact and draw the viewer in. Everything to Lisa is some sort of new adventure.... always trying new things, jumping about from place to place, rarely letting the dust settle, exploring constantly. As a result, she's become a very quick and careful observer. There are always messages I wasn’t expecting and they don’t always appear before the process is well under way. My personal mantra, "Embracing Randomness", is to see something wondrous in an apparently aesthetically-lacking environment and create from it a new way of looking at the world. My work represents to me some of the surreal in our everyday reality.
She presents her contemporary imagery in the form of large-scale metallic c-prints in elegant floating plexiglass giving the image a slick wet-print look. She also marries transparent prints with hand-brushed aluminum allowing the subtle texture to add dimension to the work. Presentation size and substrate of most of her work can be varied to accommodate any space. Personal consultations are available. Commissions always welcomed.
