I am an author and publisher running a small press specialising in experimental horror, slipstream and SF fiction - Eibonvale Press. I started off mostly as a railway photographer, which came about when I was editing a collection of unusual stories connected to the railway entitled Rustblind and Silverbright. I issued the guidelines for the book but also wanted to prove to the writing community that there was more to trains than classicism and locomotive spotting. I started ranging round the rail network in my native London with my camera, trying to capture just what it was that fascinated me so - and the habit stuck! The railways flow through the city, sometimes high and grandiose, sometimes hidden and furtive - and they always cause curious juxtapositions, intrusions and clashes, or give me glimpses into hidden worlds. As far as I am concerned, the trick was not to take a great picture of a train, the trick was to find a great photograph and then allow a train to IMPROVE it!
Over the years, however, I came to see myself more as an urban explorer in my very small way than a trainspotter. My love of the hidden places and unexpected juxtapositions soon expanded to include other aspects of the city. Especially canal culture and street art, as well as the atmosphere that hangs over the city at night. I still like to focus on London's oddities and backwaters, things glimpsed through the cracks or down the alleys. And the wonderful thing about London is that no matter how much I do this, the supply of these glimpses seems endless. There is always some new art, some odd place that I've never been, some new surprise around the next corner. London is truly vast and infinite.
