Bio

I am now retired and live in Redmond, Oregon in eastern Oregon with my wife, Kim, a retired R.N. and a biochemist before that. I retired from computer and software engineering.

Most of my photography is centered on events, such as cosplay at comic cons, air shows and historical re-enactments, although I do photograph other topics from time to time. I use small sensor cameras - including 1" sensor Nikon 1 cameras and micro four thirds - I like the results and that I do not have to carry heavy gear, like large full frame cameras and lenses.

I also shoot 3D photos and 3D video that I post online from time to time.

Weird Background Stuff

I worked since the age of 10 (neighborhood lawn and garden work, then retail as a teen), missed about 2 years of K-12 education due to injuries, illness, and skipping my senior year and going to college. I never graduated from high school(!), but I did complete a B.S. in computer science (UC, Irvine), an M.B.A. (Go Zags!) and an M.S. in software engineering (Regis, 2012), and additional grad courses in computer security (U of I) and medical informatics (OHSU). Had to pay all my own college tuition.

Worked for many companies, including in Silicon Valley, Microsoft, Agilent, Vivato Wireless, wrote a dozen books, taught dozens of college courses, and have 2 patents (one in wireless and one in aviation). I have a private pilot's certificate but have not flown in forever. Now my flying is limited to my 14-foot hovercraft out on lakes and using flight simulators.

Done lots of volunteer stuff over the years: Volunteer firefighter, Red Cross Disaster Services, search and rescue, Amateur Radio Emergency Communications especially for disasters and wildland fire support. For ten years I was a FIRST Robotics engineering mentor, volunteering hundreds of hours per year with high school students in launching their STEM careers.

Brain Injuries

I had multiple traumatic brain injuries spanning decades including a 5-inch-long skull fracture/"moderate" TBI, and 5 other concussions that broke bike helmets and other bones.

Back in the day, I had zero medical care for TBI. When I fractured my skull I was seen by a family doctor; it was 5 days before I even got an x-ray! My head was fractured from left temple to well behind my left ear. I lay in bed, at home, for weeks, throwing up. For a period in there, I am told, I could not communicate nor get dressed by myself or walk to the kitchen as I was so ill. Was at home for about six weeks then half days in school for a few months.

As an adult I had more bike crashes, a fall on ice, etc, that caused more knock outs, broke bike helmets and other bones, leading to further brain issues. Not until age 58(!) did I learn I had suffered brain injuries and had been dealing with a host of problems for decades. Finally got treatment. The lack of care should not have happened.

Family

We have 3 adult "kids" - oldest daughter is a psychiatric nurse practitioner (BSN, MSN) and Russian linguist (B.A.), middle son is a research scientist (M.S., Ph.D.) in semiconductors, and youngest daughter is a data analyst (B.S. geology, B.S. microbiology, B.S. cell biology and genetics, M.S. geochemistry) based in Vermont. We are very proud of their amazing accomplishments and the great things they are doing to help others :) We also have three wonderful grandkids.

Been catching up on family history - my ancestors immigrated from Norway, Switzerland/Prussia, and rest from England. Been studying Norwegian every day since mid 2021 - Jeg liker å lære norsk, and también estudiando español.

Pets

Over many years we have had numerous pets living with us, including gerbils, rabbits, a couple of guinea pigs, ducks, goats, dogs, dogs, dogs and dogs (multiple german shepherds, multiple malamutes, one Siberian husky) and a lot of cats. For the first time we have no pets and our house feels dead.
