This is quite a cool way to view my pictures too: Tiltviewer. Right click on the background and choose 'Go Full Screen' for the best effect.
In any event, to see my pictures at their best, you should be able to see 16 tones on the graphic below:
Thanks to the excellent and generous Kevin Day for use of his greyscale graphic. Alternatively, you can calibrate your monitor following these instructions.
I've found my photos look best when viewed using Safari as the browser (it respects the sRGB colour profile I tend to use when preparing my photos for upload to flickr), although I'm told Firefox 3 also lets you select a colour profile for your browsing.
