I travel light with a Sony "mirrorless" camera in a small bag. My Sony A7CR is the 7th model I've owned since leaving Nikon for Sony in 2012. This is my first full-frame digital camera. I have a Sony 24-105mm f/4 G lens and a Sony 55-210 APSC that provides a zoom up to 315mm in a very small, lightweight package. I also have a Sigma 100-400 full-frame Contemporary lens. I formerly carried a Sony RX100m6 but it has been replaced with a Google Pixel 8 Pro phone 50MP camera. I never use a tripod nor a flash. The A7CR camera has a 61MP sensor that can also shoot a burst of 16 shots to produce a 240MP image if desired. It delivers a world-class focus system. The shallower depth of field makes it easier to isolate the subject from the non-subject.

For reasons of travelling light, I left my professional gear at home on a 3-week trip to France. I used my Google Pixel 8 Pro as my only camera. It worked out very well. I now have an iPhone 17 Pro with similar specs of the Pixel, but Google is more honest with their specifications and I prefer using the Pixel over the iPhone. The best camera in the world is the one that you have with you, and the iPhone is the one that is always with me.

I gather photographs mostly on trips to Europe once or twice a year. I then see what I can do with them with post processing. I use Lightroom to catalog my photos and to dispatch to other programs, like Photoshop. I make use of layers and layer masks in Photoshop.

I try to produce photographs that are realistic and high in detail. I like to photograph patterns of beauty that I see around me. I try to minimize any distractions and to separate the subject from the background. My emphasis is on an artistic result rather than photojournalistic accuracy. Any composition tips are welcome.

I am happier when I see the world through the eyes of a photographer. Colors and patterns appear that would otherwise be overlooked.

Kim says:

I love traveling virtually with Duane and seeing the world through his eyes. His aesthetic sensibility and thoughtful post-processing work enhance the beauty of his images - and his ability to focus on the odd and quirky aspects of life take his work far beyond the postcard level.

Duane is a talented photographer who has a strong sense of what makes a pleasing image. That statement may seem unacceptably vague, but when someone can communicate aesthetically through subject matter that is largely foreign to me, I can only say that that person "has it"--and I consider that a high compliment. Duane is a talented photographer who has a strong sense of what makes a pleasing image. That statement may seem unacceptably vague, but when someone can communicate aesthetically through subject matter that is largely foreign to me, I can only say that that person "has it"--and I consider that a high compliment. I also value Duane's interest in others' work. He is one of my contacts who makes my Flickr experience more like participating in a community of photographers, as opposed to just uploading photos to a website!
