I obtained my BSc(Hons) in Information Technology at the University of Western Australia in 1997, followed by a BE(Hons) in Electronic Engineering in 1999. Since graduating, I have been with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, where I've worked predominantly as a software engineer, system integrator and architect. In 2008, I returned to the University of Western Australia, where I am currently working towards my candidature in the Adaptive Systems research group.
Shortly after starting my BSc/BE degree, I realised that I am also drawn to the cognitive sciences, psychology, linguistics and statistical models of learning — be they natural language or other; so much so that my information technology honours project was actually supervised by a member of the Department of Psychology.
However, I’ve always been a bit of a nerd and aspiring hacker (in the correct sense of the word) so I am still very happy with my choice to major in IT/Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Within these areas, my primary interests lie in the areas of operating system design and computing history; more recently I’ve also started to dabble with microcontrollers, and I’m also a member of the relatively new Artifactory — Perth’s very own hackerspace.
Outside of these spheres, I also like to dabble in photography, I enjoy the occasional hike, rogaine or game of squash, and I help out quite regularly at a local native animal/bird shelter.
