I am a New Zealand born photographer and Graphic Designer.

BIO: Born in Wellington, New Zealand, I grew up overlooking the spectacular Wellington harbour. Son of architect, artist and adventure sailor D E Barry-Martin.

I showed a flair for art from an early age, later attending Wellington Polytech Design School where I studied photography. I established a solo graphic design business after moving to Auckland in 1979, and relocated it six years later to Sydney, Australia. In 1998, I moved to the Byron Shire, in Northern NSW where the region’s natural beauty inspired me to seriously develop my passion for photography and in 2004 I produced a range of large format prints.

I am an admirer of photographers such as Ansell Adams, and motivated by the skill and imagination of National Geographic photographers such as Frans Lanting. Like Adams I aim ...

‘to present visual evidences of memories and mysteries at a personal level of experience’.

AWARDS: In 2005 I was ‘People’s Choice’ runner up in the Olive Cotton National Portraiture Competition with the photo of fisherman ‘Mohammed’* and won the senior category in the Brunswick Heads photo competition NSW in 2005 and 2007 and have been ‘Highly Commended’ at other photographic competitions in Australia and New Zealand.

WHERE: Many of my Australian images are taken in and around Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, NSW. I have also put together a Tasmanian series, an Indochina series and a collection from New Zealand – both North and South Island.

BUY: Most images are high resolution suitable for reproduction at 300dpi up to A2 and sometimes even to A1*. If you want to buy a PRINT or USE an image please contact me stating required print size and resolution and print run and type (eg travel magazine article or advertising campaign etc) and whether you want exclusive or limited rights to the image. I will then inform you of the availability and pricing.

* Indochina photos are not as high a resolution as others and are suitable for up to A3.

WORK: I am available for ASSIGNMENTS, short term contracts or even part time work and am open to pretty much anything, bearing in mind that I am primarily a nature or scenic photographer and not a studio photographer and prefer outdoor and natural-light work. Since September 2011 I have also been doing real estate photography.

GEAR: I have a Canon 5D, 7D and many lenses and a Fuji X100 compact. The photographs are manipulated in Photoshop but usually only to adjust exposures or to delete spots as per traditional darkroom photography. With this I aim to achieve a natural look that removes the photographer from the picture and allows the viewer to connect with the scene in a seemingly natural way.
