What to say?

For years, I carried a camera with me most of the time, particularly when travelling or on holiday. Then one day I realised that I wasn't really seeing the places I was visiting, I was so busy looking through a camera lens. So I stopped carrying the camera (at that time a 35mm SLR and rather big!).

But in the past couple of years, the advent of cameraphones has made it possible to have a small digital camera with me all the time, and I've gradually been rediscovering the pleasure I used to get from recording things I see around me, and sharing that with others. The digital cameras in cameraphones get better every year, so the quality of the photographs that it's possible to take with them get better all the time too.

Then, through pixeldiva, I found my way to blogging, photoblogging, and Flickr. And here I am.

Some of the photographs in my Flickr photostream are very pedestrian, and don't pretend to be anything else - I blog most of my work and personal journeys around the UK for all sorts of reasons (in particular so my family can see where I am, and that I'm OK, and to give me something to do on the journey!). It's also nice to look back on those photo-journals. So while I do take photographs for their own sake, and while travelling I do occasionally manage to take a photograph that I feel has some merit as a picture in its own right, many of my photographs are documentary rather than artistic, and are sometimes taken under conditions that make it almost impossible to get a "good" picture.
