I am a professional scientist with a background in physics (and therefore a true Nerd!) In my professional life I create nanoscale optical circuits, so I spend a lot of time playing with light in various forms.
I have done photography as a hobby since I was about 10 years old. In those days I developed my own photos and printed them in black and white. My favorite camera was a Pentax spotmatic. But after it was stolen, along with all my lenses and accessories, I sort of gave up. I recently got back into photography when my two daughters bought digital SLRs but wouldn't let me touch them! Last year I purchased a Canon 7D SLR and have come to realize how much I still enjoy taking photos. I usually edit them using Adobe Lightroom which I find very useful. Recently I discovered High Dynamic Range(HDR) photography which I am playing around with.
Another aspect I am interested in is computer generated images. I have created a few using the free software Povray. This uses mathematical functions to represent shapes and textures and creates three dimensional images based on ray tracing. I take it as a challenge to create interesting "photos" only using mathematics! (I told you I was a Nerd!)
So why did I choose the alias "Doctor Lighthouse"? Well, do you know how many Tim Davis's there are, even just on Flickr? Check out my Photostream and see if you can guess ...
