My initiation into formal photography stems from a life altering bicycling accident. In the wake of profound inquietude, one intense introductory course on black & white photography helped me gain new bearing. A fervent desire to capture on film a glimmer of the passion I once felt in my life soon began to replace consuming resentment and cynicism. Preserving human interactions, observing people of different backgrounds and the desire to explore their lifestyles foreign to mine via film began to quiet profound confusion. And in the process I began to reacquaint myself with the person I once was, who I never was; more importantly, who I was to become.
I see now the fast paced world we live in. Human interactions are replaced by mechanical communications in an effort to deliver information at blistering fast speeds. Lives are governed by the same pace and result in a routine that can consume all creativity, originality, and social awareness. Amidst this reality I admire and am drawn to those who have not been stripped of the desire to live with conviction. Those who live with such feverish passion do so in the shadows of the fickle minded.
My form of social commentary allows me to ardently document the emotions that an event, a place, an interaction, and/or encounter elicits. The cameras I use, the selection of paper and toning processes I employ on a print all serve to arouse and emphasize the sense that I am alive. It is then, when I find myself crossing over from the unfamiliar to the familiar when I feel alive.
