Desperate John's 'Imagined' series of scenarios are something that once seen, almost feel like you were waiting for them. For me 'Imagined' evokes damaged surrealist dreams and nightmares, from childhood to media saturated, guilt ravaged adulthood. They recall much of art history, most significantly perhaps Hogarth, Goya and Dickens, but equally the tv workings of war and disaster reporting crews. The children seem to represent us most - our childhoods - and present and future versions of our most vulnerable selves. This is that rare thing - ever increasing technical and aesthetic virtuosity fused with actual talent, subject matter and passion. I think these works are exceptionally perceptive, imaginative and culturally important.
