I'm inspired by landscape, both natural and urban, I like to celebrate the mundane, forgotten corners, moments, juxtapositions, effects of light. I'm fascinated by the fringes where the built environment gives way to nature. I’m not great at photographing people, I find it hard to ask, I admire those who can.
I like quality of film and the versatility of digital, but I'm most drawn to the quality of black and white film, which I like to scan beyond the edges - sometimes you'll see the sprocket holes, emphasising the "thingness" of the analog image. I find the discipline of framing the final composition in the big, bright and minimal viewfinder of my Olympus OM1, using a prime lens, gives me a much more intimate connection to the subject than when using a digital SLR with all its distractions and infinite settings.
That said, I do use digital for convenience, and sometimes I emulate the aesthetic of my analog images by applying a filter I developed which gives it a natural looking border. I don’t intend to deceive by doing this, I just like the aesthetic (the camera data gives it away; the genuine analog images are marked as being from an Epson Perfection V700).
I like Flickr for the connections I've made and the extraordinary images I see. The appeal of my photography is not obvious or universal but here I've found people who "get" it. Thanks to all who've encouraged me with positive comments since 2006.
