The Delany Archive is located at Carlow College, Carlow Town, Ireland. Further information is available on our website: www.delanyarchive.ie.

The Archive is named for Bishop Daniel Delany who had a connection with all four Archive partners. Daniel Delany served as Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin between 1787-1814; he founded both the Brigidine Sisters and Patrician Brothers in 1807 and 1808 respectively; and was co-founder of Carlow College which opened to both ecclesiastical and lay students in 1793.

The Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin includes parts of seven counties to greater or lesser degrees. They are Carlow, Laois, Kildare, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Offaly.

The main mission of both the Brigidine Sisters and Patrician Brothers was education. Both congregations variously spread their wings beyond Ireland and houses are found in countries including Australia, India and the USA.

Carlow College educated priests for both Irish and foreign dioceses for more than 200 years. Lay students were educated at Carlow College until 1892 when they were removed to nearby Knockbeg College, which had been operating as a school for younger boys from 1848. Carlow College is now a third-level College which focuses on courses in the areas of Social Care and the Humanities. Knockbeg College continues as a second-level school for boys.
