Born in Doncaster in 1943, Educated Woodfield Primary and Doncaster Grammar School. 1959-1963 worked in the Met Office at RAF Finningley as a Met Assistant
I began photography in the 1950s, with a Box Brownie, graduating to a Kodak (?) folding camera given to me by my grandad.
My first real camera was a Pentax Sla 35mm, bought in 1963 on way down to South Georgia as a meteorologist. I have remained true to Pentax ever since - now using a K20 and a K7 (still have my *istD & K10 bodies). However, I do use a Leica D-Lux 4 compact as my 'always-with-me' camera. with a Pentax Optio W90 for 'extreme' photography. Just recently I have added a Lumix-GF2 (inter-changeable lens 'compact'). My ambition is to own a 645D MF!
On returning to the UK worked for a few years as a television sound engineer (taking the opportunity to photograph a few celebrities). Member Edinburgh PS.
Moved to Fair Isle in 1972 - from one remote island in the South Atlantic to another on the edge of the North Atlantic! for 40 years made a living as a crofter/meteorologist/photographer/airfield manager/Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages/IT Instructoe/one-time fireman, lighthouse keeper and coastguard cliff-rescue team member.
While many of my photographs are Fair Isle landscapes, a large proportion also document island life. During the past 40 years my photographs document a change from a crofting life-style barely altered over generations, to one where Fair Isle - while trying to keep its traditional way of life - moves to accommodate the benefits of the digital age.
My Fair Isle images have a particular focus on the link between land, sea and sky. Changing light-patterns frequently alter the mood, allowing many different interpretations of the same scene. This is an especially useful aspect, as my photographic activities are limited to a 'patch' just a few square kilometres in extent!
As well as on Flickr, some ofI my images also feature on the prestigious Pentax Photo Gallery at www.pentaxphotogallery.com/davewheeler
