Dave sees with a clear eye that cuts through the usual artistic pretensions to the heart of whatever he's looking at. He's one of those photographers for whom looking at what's there, without having to force it into a form that expresses something about him-as-artist, is a real artform. Given that, the interesting thing for me is how his work is different from commercial photography. His pictures definitely have that professional distance and sheen, but also still manage to exude warmth, wit and personality. I feel very lucky to have him as my photo buddy (and teacher).
