I began taking photography seriously in 2016 with the purchasing of a used Nikon D300. When I had confidence in the basics, I purchased a 300mm F4 prime lens and a 1.4 TC so that I could photograph birds with a fairly lightweight kit. Since then, I have slowly moved up the "learning curve" of photography, bird behaviour, and post-processing. I upgraded my camera to a D500.
In May 2020 I acquired a Nikon Z6 with the 24-70mm F4 lens and F2Z converter. I was becoming increasingly interested in focus stacking landscape and macro images. In June, 2021 I became the happy owner of the new Nikon 105 mm Z mount macro lens.
In 2024 I had the opportunity to acquired the complete Olympus photography kit of a member of my photography club. Now in my mid-seventies I saw the weight advantages of a M4/3 system being increasingly valuable and the compromises associated with M4/3 systems becoming less impactful due to the technical advances of cameras and the development of excellent noise reduction software. As a result I kept my newly acquired Olympus lenses and traded in all my Nikon gear. I purchased the OM Systems OM-1 Mk2 and the Olympus 300mm F4 Pro lens with the 1.4 teleconverter. I now have a wider focal length range of lenses and a more capable camera for bird photography. And it is lighter weight!
I live in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada in a grassland ecosystem. Now retired, I have had the opportunity to travel in the USA and other destinations including Costa Rica. My photography hobby keeps me engaged in the natural and urban world and through the Kamloops PhotoArts Club, has kept me connected to local photographers. Although bird photography is still the majority of my images, I am increasingly interested in landscape, macro and sports photography.
