Statement

Providing a fresh, whimsical body of work, Dan Schuster's sculptures recall the traditional look of American folk and outsider art. The work is totally unique, dryly humorous and appealing. His work is a visual and tactile expression of its values and portrays the simplest of form much like that of a child’s imagination. The wood is used in its natural found state, from reclamed shipping pallets, borrowing from the theories of Japanese aesthetic principles (wabi-sabi). Incorporating imperfections and natural marred roughness, it creates the sense of antique “found in grandma’s attic” qualities that time itself leaves behind. By mixing these principles with his background of graphic design, Dan expresses humor and approachability through color, form, function and subject.

What is Wabi-sabi?

The term Wabi-sabi suggests such qualities as impermanence, asymmetry, and imperfection. In keeping with the material used, the texture remains rough, uneven, variegated, and random, giving the appearance of an unimpeded natural process. Wabi-sabi is the art of finding beauty in imperfection and celebrates the natural cracks and marks that time and weather and use leave behind.

All pieces are original in concept and design. Certain works can be reproduced on a commission basis. Makes a great gift!
