I am Nina Scott-Stoddart, a Canadian artist living and working in the small town of Lunenburg in Nova Scotia, Canada. While I have painted in oils and watercolours, my current medium is acrylic paints and collage, using vintage images, antique paper and sheet music.
Like many artists, I've painted and drawn since childhood. My formal training has included stints at the Haliburton School of Fine Arts in Ontario, as well as a BFA from York University (Toronto), where I pursued studies in both music and visual arts. In addition to painting and collage, I've designed sets and costumes for opera and theatre. (I am also an opera singer, director and producer -- a mezzo soprano).
My work is in private collections around the world.
My current series of collages have grown out of a collection of antique music and photographs combined with text and other papers, including reproductions of great paintings. I tend to start with a central image that captures my imagination, and then add background (either painted or collage) and text. When the images and text collide on the canvas, stories seem to emerge, because the images and text exert a certain power over each other.
A series of my works are based on images of opera singers. Some of them remain ostensibly about opera and others simply use the photos as jumping off points for exploring other ideas or emotions.
