After successfully building my first working camera, I found my voice. The cameras, which are abnormal to today’s standards, are interesting to me. I have regressed from shooting mostly digital to mostly film. I use a 4x5 Speed Graphic camera as well as several cameras I have made myself using wood and plastic lenses.
Night photography has become a passion of mine since my first night photography show,DarknessDarkness. This show encompassed some of the masters of contemporary night photography. Seeing these striking images pushed me to find my own voice within this community.
My first series, Into the Night explored the uneasiness of the night through a child’s eyes. Nocturnal View takes the same ideas in mind but look at the landscape from a more mature standpoint. I looked at the landscape as quiet and beautiful. Disconnecting from the daily grind to stop and explore night as an alien on an alien planet.
My work revolves around a constant theme of memory. I come upon a scene and make images that trigger my own memories as well as the viewers’ memories. As a stock photographer snaps a photo of a face, one discerns a portrait. I make images that are stock memories. They trigger the viewers to think about their own lives and their own memories making each image connect with the viewer at multiple levels.
