My husband bought my first 35mm Canon Rebel for me 4 years ago. I am sure there is no need to mention that he bought it for me as an "Oh sh*t, I just bought 4 new rifles and how am I going to break it to Dayna". Either way I loved it and it made me enjoy taking photographs so much more than my point and shoot. I upgraded last Christmas (thanksJT, LT and KT) to digital, finally. I am still learning but I feel as if I have learned 10x's more in the past year than I did in the previous 4.
