Charles Cavanaugh, Ph.D., Computer Scientist

About Dr. Cavanaugh

I am a software engineer and computer science professional. I've been a professor, led a team of talented students and faculty in building Louisiana's first autonomous ground vehicle, CajunBot qualifying 7th in the nation amongst 50 competitors in the 2004 DARPA Grand Challenge. I later went into industry and consulting in various programming languages, database platforms, and containerization and virtual machines.

Living out loud

On a personal note, I'm a non-binary transgender individual. I support human rights. Both professionally and personally I'm known by a number of names, Charles/Charlie/Cyndi/Cynthia/Dr. Cavanaugh. Besides Charles, my mom chose Cynthia because not too long ago ultrasounds were not so common. The name stuck, because it also has 7 letters beginning with C. So, I have that as a preferred name, but I do like Charles and Charlie as well. Some colleagues know me as Cyndi, short for Cynthia.
