CommUniverCity SJSU was founded in 2005 as a unique three-sector partnership between San José State University, the City of San José, and the local community. What began as a small initiative to improve local neighborhoods has since grown into a thriving model of civic engagement, service-learning, and social responsibility.

CommUniverCity’s objective is to take community-identified needs and utilize faculty expertise and the people-power of students enrolled in courses to address those needs.

Over the last 20 years, CommUniverCity has launched numerous successful projects, from urban development initiatives to education programs that have empowered residents and students alike.

Since its inception, CommUniverCity has collaborated with 25,469 Community Engaged Learners (CEL), educating 134,379 Community Participants, resulting in a $12.62 million investment value.
