"i am original by design, a blissful misfit."
i love art. visual art in particular fascinates me to a great degree. the mediums i derive the most pleasure in are photography (macro, architectural, minimalist, abstract...), drawing/painting (cubism, abstract expressionism, lyrical abstraction, minimalism, surrealism...), and digital design. my single-most favored artist is M.C. Escher. The following is a quotation of his regarding the expressive aspect of his art:
"Ideas came into my mind quite unrelated to graphic art, notions which so fascinated me that I longed to communicate them to other people. This could not be achieved through words, for these thoughts were not literary ones, but mental images of a kind that can only be made comprehensible to others by presenting them as visual images." - M.C. Escher
i find the techniques used to create different designs to be a very fascinating aspect of the work, as much, or more so than the end result at times. with some of my work, i have invented original methods of creating designs that focus more on how i create it, instead of what it will be. through practicing these techniques in repetition, i've found that i can then use them to reach an end result of my desire. it is like learning how to draw in a methodically geometric, or cubist manner, and then using that to create representations of real objects in a cubist style.
i enjoy using things that i create, like drawings, sketches, photographs, poems, etc. as building blocks for further creations. it is almost as if i use visual art that i have made as "brushes" with which i impart particular characteristics from previously composed work onto the next. this process can repeat over and over, which to me deepens the scope of a design as it is refined and evolves. also, i find using multiple media to accomplish this works very well. i believe this is because it opens up dimensions of creativity that can be found in the different manner with which an artist approaches a certain medium. For example, the way that i draw or paint is unique to myself, as it generally is with everyone, but when i add my personal style of photography to a drawn or painted a composition, both myself as the creator and the viewer as an outside observer get a more complete interpretation of who i am as a visual artist.
"the eye, mind, and hand of an artist should speak as a single voice that delineates both a meaning, and understanding, through visually rendered expression." - ali|en|vision
