Founded in 1989, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry is a center for experimental enterprises across academic disciplines on the Carnegie Mellon University campus, the community of Pittsburgh, and internationally. The STUDIO’s mission is to support atypical, interdisciplinary, and inter‐institutional research projects and educational initiatives at the intersections of arts, sciences, technology and culture.
The STUDIO advocates for interdisciplinarity throughout Carnegie Mellon by providing direct administrative and logistical support to visiting artists, faculty and staff engaged in hybrid research projects. Researchers are expected to engage with students and the broader public. The STUDIO also conducts educational activities (such as performances, conferences, symposia, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and) that address timely concerns in emerging fields that cut across technology and culture. The STUDIO seeks to become a form of connective tissue, linking the arts to each other, and to the rest of the university, through collaborative research and increased dialogue. The STUDIO is ideally positioned within Carnegie Mellon to support a wide variety of research and educational activities at the intersection of arts and technology.
