The ability to faithfully capture poignant street scenes or picture postcard perfect landscapes, pin sharp wildlife shots or portraits that lay bare the soul of the subject are all qualities that are needed in a good photographer. The decisive moment captured forever to be marveled at for generations to come, humbling yet inspiring those who follow after. Photos that can make the spirit soar like an eagle or others that can cause despair at the fragility of the human condition. Such as this is what truly sets apart a world class photographer from the rest. Why on earth are you looking at my photostream then, because you won't find anything like that here. About half the time I manage to get the camera the right way round and sometimes I even manage to remove the lens cap too. After that, who knows what will happen. Unless you share my fetish for steam trains or the high places of Northern England, then you probably won't like what you find here.
Nothing to see here, Move along!
I'm not the world's greatest fan of sparkly gif comments, so please don't feel the need to bestow one upon me. I've also got just about as many contacts as I can comfortably cope with, so please don't feel upset if you add me as a contact and I don't reciprocate. Offers of food, beer or expensive Canon lenses will almost certainly result in me abandoning my principles.
All of my photos are uploaded with "All Rights Reserved" however permission to use images elsewhere will usually be given upon request for charitable/educational/non profit making purposes.
Those nice people at Getty Images have started selling some of my shots. If you really want to use some on your project, then click here.

Exceptional. Creative. Generous and kind. Not always easy to understand, but definitely outstanding in his photographic skills. And very supportive. A contact just like you want them to be.

Well what’s to say? Planes, Trains and Automobiles and sometimes Flowers with the occasional Beast thrown in. He is an exceptional photographer. But better than that he is willing to help those of us that are not. Ask a question about what he’s doing in an image he will tell you in plain speak. Sometimes tongue in cheek, but that’s OK too. He is far too witty for his own sake. If he latches onto your site, “Buckle your seat belt. It’s going to be a bumpy ride” You will love it! Thanks Ray

226 contacts... Crazy Ray is a digital slut

He has an endless quest for barge poles and Keira Knightley but you'd have to ask him about that - flickr draws out the strangest and most surprising characteristics in people, Ray is no exception. Don't bother lurking on street corners on cold, dark nights risking your camera kit and well being to take long exposure shots. Stay, home in the warm and toast marshmallows over a roaring fire - because he's sure to post the image you always wanted to take anyway. Leave your anorak and notebook at home and see if you can actually catch a train in this country to deliver you to your destination (apparently it can be done); there's no need for loitering furtively on windy platforms or attending steam engine appreciation meets at the crack of dawn just to get your very own version of the quintessential 'Railway Children' image, Ray already did it in some style and without the orphans! If you have a strong opinion about HDR, don't look at his tags then play the 'Is it or isn't it?' game... you may surprise yourself. Argue with him about it later - preferably in the DMU: Sunscapes Group if you prefer a belly laugh! Ray thinks, and observes, takes the shot and observes some more. With a twinkle in his eye and a truck load of dry humour & general goodliness.....oh sod this... Ray makes me laugh and lends me stuff, he's a good bloke. Look at his pictures and read his comment streams; you might learn something about photography too - now that is a flickr-bonus!

yes, yes, yes...he does hdr's. And he does them well...beautiful, subtle things of fragile beauty, but then there's also the moody, long exposure landscapes, full of wit and charm and grace, and an eye for composition and line to die for... ...and trains. Lot's of them. Great long boring things, mainly green, and leaking smoke and dirt. Most of them seem to be old too, just to ensure that any potential interest ("Hey! isn't that *me* looking glassy eyed and hungover out of the window of the 4.14 to cardiff?") is sucked out. But you can't have everything.
