Cotlands is a non-governmental organisation offering shelter, medical and psychological care to abandoned, HIV-positive, orphaned and terminally-ill children from birth to 14 years of age. We were 70 years old last year! At present, Cotlands serves eight communities (Johannesburg South, Soweto, Alexandra and Thembisa in Gauteng, Hlabisa in KwaZulu-Natal, East London in Eastern Cape, Helderberg in Western Cape and Lydenburg in Mpumalanga), impacting more than 2 000 families directly (through home-based care and residential care) and indirectly (via outreach, training, capacity building and counselling). Care now extends through the continuum – from identifying vulnerable children in the community to end-stage hospice care for children dying of Aids.
