Barbara Hastings-Asatourian
Drag to set position!
Barbara Hastings-Asatourian is an experienced public health professional, who has worked as a nurse, midwife, health visitor and senior academic throughout her career of over 30 years. She set up Contraception Education as a social enterprise in 2001 and has seen its potential to reduce teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and HIV and AIDS.
Once launched, Contraception Education soon became an award winning organisation and Barbara has featured on BBC1's 4X4 reports and on BBC2's daily Politics Show, two prime time National Television programmes. Two of our team are nurses, midwives and senior academics in teaching and in research at the University of Salford. They see themselves as having a very significant social change role, alongside the commercial side of the social enterprise. Contraception Education does not only produce sex education resources, the organisation also delivers training, seminars and conferences for professionals, parents and to young people themselves.
The training arm of Contraception Education is therefore very well equipped to assist in the development of HIV and AIDS awareness and teenage pregnancy reduction programmes. The organisation is keen to use new technologies and very interested in Virtual Learning Environments and the use of the open source VLE, Moodle, as a method of delivery.
Barbara developed and produced several games and activities in English, French and Spanish, and a resource for South Africa called Play-it-Safe on CD, which has been approved by the Education Department for the Western Cape and is for sale via Sherston Sheshani in the Western Cape.
Last May the Contraception Board Game was assessed at Jomo Kenyatta University in Nairobi, and last October was tried by a youth organisation in Zambia - and both times it was found to be highly effective and interesting to the teenagers who trialed it. A colleague took the same game when she undertook VSO in Guyana and had the same response.
Barbara believes that there is further international potential for her resources and training methods
