Colin Garratt – ‘the David Attenborough of the steam locomotive’ – has written and illustrated over fifty books, mostly based on his expeditions to document the world’s last working steam locomotives. This unique odyssey has been a constant race against time as railway steam power heads towards extinction.

 

In addition to writing books and traveling, Colin Garratt is the director of Milepost 92 ½, which houses the world’s finest railway picture library. Milepost is a team of talented individuals offering a picture library and photographic service to the railway industry in addition to cataloging and conserving photographic collections on behalf

of individuals. The company also has a vigorous publishing division.

 

Colin Garratt lives with his Chinese wife Lui Yanchun and his five children in a Georgian farmhouse in Leicestershire, situated alongside milepost 92 ½ on Britain’s Midland Main Line, and overlooking the bridge from which Colin watched his first trains as a child of nine.
