Códice Tuna Colectivo de Arte
Drag to set position!
Códice Tuna is the name of the international art collective founded in 2008.
Códice Tuna in Spanish means: "The Indian-fig Codex" and it draws back from our Mexican roots denoting, like the cactus fruit, the pungent and itchy but acid-sweet vision of our art.
It reads itself like a pre-hispanic codex where the word and image coexist to tell a story. There fore we call our approach "visual literature" because often words accompany our images.
We are currently exploring the use of languages other than Spanish for our project.
We are two young self-proclaimed artists who influenced by popular art and kitsch, as well as mysticism and surrealism decided to give form to our vision of the world through art.
We use different techiniques and media to share our critical vision. We like to provoke and to incite reflexion.
Recently we have decided to share our art in the spirit of popular and street art through stencils, stickers, t-shirts and other accessories. We hope with this not only to share our vision with the world, but also to find echoes in like-minded folks.
Codice Tuna just recently published its first book called "Caracol Asfalto" (or Asphalt Snail in Spanish) on the Blurb Website. It is a combination of images and poetry in the spirit of Códice Tuna.
Our Web-page is currently under development and hopefully will be soon available.
Códice Tuna has been influenced by many artists and movements. The main influences have been from the Art Brut, Surrealism, Dadaism, Pop, Graffitti and Street Art as well as Kitsch and popular culture particularly from Mexico and India but also from other countries. More directly the influence has come from our mentors: the parents of one of its founding members artists themselves.
We are both self-taught artists and have been experimenting with several media. Particularly with digital media and the editing program GIMP.
