I've realised why I'm infatuated with the square format. It's a frame that forces you to compose the picture properly; composition becomes the primary means of unifying the picture, over and above all other elements. The square format is thus the unnatural way of viewing the world that insists that there is an inherent order in the world, albeit one that is not usually revealed to the un-photographic eye. Like Pope's insistent use of the rhyming couplet, the square frame is a means of ordering the world, re-arranging sensory chaos in the faith that there is a coherent meaning hidden behind it.
