Charleston Kids with Cameras is an on-going mentorship program formed to help inner city boys and girls see both the world beyond their neighborhoods and the opportunities available to them.
Our methods to establish this goal is to develop educational programs using mentors with specific writing, photographic, and videographic skills to teach the students the fundamentals of these art forms. We meet two Sundays per month. One Sunday session is a photo shoot with the children, under the supervision of a mentor, taking pictures to carry out an assignment using digital and video cameras. The other Sunday is a review session where the student’s pictures are reviewed with the mentor to discuss the quality of the photos and ways to improve them.
Using the students participation, along with their parents or guardians, we build exhibits of their photos that will be displayed at high profile venues. We are working on developing a system for tracking the achievement levels of each student and documenting their progress. We are also developing a close relationship with area schools and city departments to coordinate activities and enlist their support and recommendations.
Charleston Kids with Cameras is under the Palmetto Project, a 501(c)3 non profit organization.
