"Invisible and subtle is the mind, and it flies after fancies wherever it likes; but let the wise man guard well his mind, for a mind well guarded is a source of great joy."
--The Dhammapada, 35-6
"He who in early days was unwise but later found wisdom, he sheds a light over the world like that of the moon when free from clouds."
--The Dhammapda, 172
"To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
--Elliott Erwitt
"I don’t have a burning desire to go out and document anything. It just happens when it happens. It’s not a conscious effort, nor is it a struggle. Wouldn’t do it if it was. The idea of the suffering artist has never appealed to me. Being here is suffering enough."
--William Eggleston
"I had this notion of what I called a democratic way of looking around, that nothing was more or less important."
--Eggleston again

Colin has a wonderful, natural eye. The best of his work seems to be of a casual, snapshot aesthetic that is deceptive in that everything is perfect within the frame. It is not casual, even though the composition and subject matter he chooses seem to point in that direction. He captures his subjects extremely well. They seem contented, unguarded, and perfectly happy to be photographed, even if unaware of the camera. I love his use of flash. Some of his work reminds me of Alex Webb, and perhaps like Webb, it has been painstakingly done and culled out of many, many exposures. Within this easy going style, he shows subtlety, serenity, and the mood of the asian city light. He is an artist of great taste. This is apparent in his deliberate and also his grab shots. I hope he continues to interpret the street in this idyllic manner, because no matter what his subject is, a positive energy and a sympathetic and humane viewpoint comes through very clearly.
